Old Forest Status of four stands by Sandy Lake
Through the collaboration of Colin Gray, Old Forest Coordinator for the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute, three stands on the east side of Sandy Lake were assessed for their Old Forest status according NSDNR’s Old Forest Policy (2012)* on October 4 and 6, 2017. *That has since been replaced by the Old Growth Forest Policy (2022)
The “Peninsula Hemlock stand” had been assessed for its Old Growth status on Oct 3, 2014 by local resident and professional forester Ed Glover and Matt Crouse from NSDNR. The results for all four stands are given below:
One tree in the “DS Hemlock stand” (approx 0.6 ha) on the west side of the lake was cored and aged. It had a dbh of approx. 75 cm, age 126 years. (See map above for location.)
