Workshops for Woodlot Owners and Silviculture Contractors
on Uneven-aged Management

Greetings!

Beginning on April 24, 2010, the Uneven-Aged Management Outreach Project will offer 15 free workshops for woodlot owners and silviculture contractors at locations throughout the province. We will be covering a wide range of topics designed to help you make your woodlot healthier and more productive. (A schedule of spring workshops is at the end of this email.)

Participation in each of the 12 woodlot owner workshops will be limited to 25 people per workshop. These workshops fill up fast. So if you are interested in attending please pre-register by emailing us at outreach@asforestry.com or by calling 902-673-2278. Places will be made available to woodlot owners on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each workshop will consist of an indoor session in the morning followed by a visit to a woodlot in the afternoon. We will be emphasizing hands-on experiences. Topics to be discussed include:

  • how to choose trees that have the potential to grow into high-value wood products;
  • silviculture treatments that can be used to grow high-quality trees (crop tree release, crop tree pruning, and selection management);
  • costs associated with quality-improvement silviculture;
  • how ecosystem-based forest management, an approach to forest management that is relatively new here in Nova Scotia, can help you decide what, where, and how to conduct treatments on your woodlot;
  • tree marking, yet another new idea in this province; and
  • the Category 7 Quality Improvement Silviculture funding program.

This email contains the dates and locations of our 6 spring workshops, all of which are designed for woodlot owners. An additional 6 woodlot owner workshops and 3 workshops for silviculture contractors will be held in fall 2010. Because participation is limited, it is important to pre-register as soon as possible. Call us at 902-673-2278 or email us at outreach@asforestry.com to pre-register.

Workshop schedule

Our first workshop will be offered on Saturday, April 24, 2010, in the West Northfield area, Lunenburg County. During the afternoon session we'll be visiting a woodlot where uneven-aged management has been practiced for generations and there have been successful silviculture funding claims for ongoing selection management, crop tree release, and crop tree pruning. The site also has areas eligible for Category 7 treatments but not yet complete.

Additional spring workshops are as follows:

  • Saturday, May 8, 2010: Cheverie, Hants County.
  • Saturday, May 15, 2010: Maitland, Annapolis County.
  • Saturday, May 29, 2010: Mooseland area, Halifax East County.
  • Saturday, June 12, 2010: near Springhill, Cumberland County.
  • Saturday, June 19, 2010: near Baddeck, Victoria County, Cape Breton.
