Sandy Lake Beach is Open Today (Aug 23, 2024)<\/p>\n<p>So read a report by Dan Ahlstrand in The Coast, Aug 14, 2024:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Three beaches closed to swimming due to water quality<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em>Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) issued recreational water quality advisory on Wednesday for Oakfield Park beach in Oakfield, Penhorn beach in Dartmouth and Sandy Lake beach in Bedford until further notice due to high bacteria levels in the water.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/parks-recreation\/programs-activities\/swimming\/supervised-beaches-outdoor-pools-splash-pads\">HRM&#8217;s website<\/a> shows &#8220;Risk Advisory in Effect&#8221; for 5 of 19 supervised beaches in HRM; these include Albro Lake Beach and Kidston Lake Beach in addition to the three cited above. As well\u00a0 Cunard Pond Beach by Williams Lake in Halifax is cited as closed due to\u00a0 Blue Green algae<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9367\" style=\"width: 777px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/versicolor.ca\/sandylakebedford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/BeachUpdates.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9367\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9367\" src=\"http:\/\/versicolor.ca\/sandylakebedford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/BeachUpdates.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"767\" height=\"859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/versicolor.ca\/sandylakebedford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/BeachUpdates.jpg 767w, https:\/\/versicolor.ca\/sandylakebedford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/BeachUpdates-268x300.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 100vw, 767px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Extract from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/parks-recreation\/programs-activities\/swimming\/supervised-beaches-outdoor-pools-splash-pads\">HRM List of status Supervised Beaches<\/a> showing the 5 beaches under &#8220;Risk Advisory&#8221; due to bacterial contamination,\u00a0 one beach &#8220;Closed&#8221; due to Blue-green algae and an example of the 13 beaches still &#8220;Open&#8221;, accessed 8 am Aug 15, 2024.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In regard to bacterial contamination, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/parks-recreation\/programs-activities\/swimming\/supervised-beaches-outdoor-pools-splash-pads\">HRM website<\/a> provides this info:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><br \/>\n<em>Bacteria testing<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>When water samples show an exceedance of the guideline, measured E. coli bacteria concentrations will be posted with beach advisories in public service announcements and on the halifax.ca website.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>While a swimming advisory is in effect, use of the beach area will be at the user\u2019s own risk, lifeguards will be present on site to advise against swimming, and swimming lessons will be cancelled.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In 2024, Halifax Regional Municipality has adopted Health Canada\u2019s updated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/publications\/healthy-living\/guidelines-canadian-recreational-water-quality-summary-document.html#a2\">Guidelines for Recreational Water Quality<\/a>. The acceptable levels of bacteria in recreational water are shown above.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Swimming and other primary contact activities are not recommended when a water quality advisory is in effect.
