These \u201chemlock vampires\u201d were first discovered in 1951 in Virginia, and by 2005 had spread to fifteen other states.<br \/>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sleloinvasives.org\/hemlock-wooly-adelgid\/\">Paul Hetzler, Cornell Cooperative Extension<\/a><br \/>Photo source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forestryimages.org\/browse\/detail.cfm?imgnum=3225077\">Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, Bugwood.org<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>We learned of the arrival of this \u00a0really horrible pest, the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid (HWA), aka the <em>Hemlock Vampires<\/em>, in NS (and in all of Atlantic Canada) only in <a href=\"http:\/\/Widespread diminishing anthropogenic effects on calcium in freshwaters Gesa A. Weyhenmeyer et al., 2019. Scientific Reports volume 9.\u201d Our global analysis of Ca and carbonate alkalinity concentrations in lakes and running waters shows that Ca and carbonate alkalinity generally strongly co-vary with highest concentrations in waters with a pH between 8.0 and 9.0, and lowest concentrations in acidic water bodies. Under the influence of anthropogenic acid deposition, however, Ca concentrations became disproportionate and unnaturally high relative to alkalinity, often accompanied by higher sulfate concentrations. As acid deposition has been increasingly mitigated in North America and Europe and freshwaters recover from anthropogenic acidification, Ca concentrations rapidly decline towards a state where they again become balanced with carbonate alkalinity. Ca concentrations may even decline below pre-acidification concentrations due to a depletion of base cations stores in the catchment soils of acid-sensitive regions, or because of other stressors including timber harvesting. Since Ca concentrations are generally low in many freshwaters, in some regions critically low, further Ca concentration declines as freshwaters fully recover from acidification will likely have widespread consequences for biota and ecosystem processes.\">Aug of 2017<\/a>, which seems like ages ago now.<\/p>\n<p>When first discovered, it had already spread though \u00a0three counties at the southwest extremity of NS (Digby, Yarmouth and Shelburne) so likely had hopped across the gulf of Maine (or got a ride on some wood) from infected areas in the northeastern USA &#8211; see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nshemlock.ca\/sites\/nshemlock.ca\/files\/creeping%20conflict%20map.jpg\">map<\/a>. The key thing to be on the lookout for, especially \u00a0in early spring when they are most prominent, \u00a0are the &#8220;cotton balls&#8221; on the underside of hemlock branches. Always check any branches that might have fallen from the tops of trees. If spotted, take a pic and report it right away to the <a href=\"https:\/\/inspection.canada.ca\/about-cfia\/contact-us\/contact-cfia-online\/eng\/1299860523723\/1299860643049\">CFIA.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are steps that we can take to slow the movement down that we should all practice whether we have it in our home county or not. \u00a0Here&#8217;s the advice From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.giantsofnovascotia.com\/\">Giants of Nova Scotia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Prevention, Prevention, Prevention<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Preventing HWA from getting to a new hemlock forest is key to slowing the spread. On its own, HWA spreads very slowly. Humans are very mobile and have the potential to relocate the bug 100s of miles in a single trip. So what can you do?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Acquire your firewood where you burn it so you don&#8217;t accidentally move wood infested with HWA (and a whole bunch of other bugs that affect other trees as well)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>When you visit a site infested with HWA (or one that could be):<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Avoid placing your gear or vehicle under or near hemlocks, particularly when it is most mobile and easily spread (May\/Jun\/Jul\/Aug)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Before you leave the hemlock forest, run a lint roller or sticky tape over your clothing to remove any crawlers that may have fallen on you<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The lint brush or sticky tape works on your pets too<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>It&#8217;s a good practice to change your clothes after you leave a potentially infested area.
