Sampling zooplankton<\/p><\/div>\n

‘Just received from Jessica Yonker at SMU in an e-mail sent to the Sandy Lake Volunteers<\/a> who facilitated their obtaining observations on Feb 20, 2026.<\/p>\n

The SMU observations are a contribution to the “Thin Ice Network” project<\/a>, run out of U of Missouri.<\/p>\n

The Sandy Lake component developed following earlier observations conducted on Sandy Lake by the SMU group in collaboration with the Sandy Lake Volunteers, some of it documented in a recent scientific paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Writes Jessica:<\/p>\n

“Just wanted to update everyone on our field excursion to Sandy Lake from 2 weeks ago. The sampling run went great\u2014it was a beautiful day to be out on the lake. We will be sending both the summer and winter samples off to the project coordinator soon… I’ve attached a few photos of the day, as well as the text of a social media post (below) that SMU science sent out.<\/p>\n

Grab Samples<\/p><\/div>\n

Last week Dr. Jess Younker and Mallory Jarvis, a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science student, did some winter sampling at Three Mile Lake, Lake Thomas and Sandy Lake last week as part of a Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (#GLEON) contribution to the global #THINice project run by Dr. Rebecca North.<\/p>\n

They added a zooplankton sampling to complement the THINice phytoplankton and water quality sample set.<\/p>\n

The research is conducted from Dr. Linda Campbell\u2019s Dynamic Environment & Ecosystem Health Research (DEEHR) lab at @SMUhalifax. Jessica is a technician in the Faculty of Science at Saint Mary\u2019s University; Mallory was a research student in the lab last summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
