{"id":5211,"date":"2021-01-05T14:44:09","date_gmt":"2021-01-05T14:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versicolor.ca\/sandylakebedford\/?page_id=5211"},"modified":"2021-01-12T11:00:33","modified_gmt":"2021-01-12T11:00:33","slug":"ec-salt","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/versicolor.ca\/sandylakebedford\/waters\/streams-wetlands\/ec-salt\/","title":{"rendered":"Stream EC (Salt)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DRAFTING<\/p>\n<p>Electrical Conductivity (EC)\u00a0 of water increases with increasing content of &#8216;salt&#8217; in the water, where\u00a0 the word &#8220;salt&#8221; is used in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salt_(chemistry)\">chemical sense.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The standard unit for electrical conductivity of water is &#8216;microsiemens per centimeter&#8217; or uS\/cm.<\/p>\n<p>Values of electrical conductivity (EC)\u00a0 in the area of 30-60 uS\/cm are typical of pristine lakes in the Halifax region. <sup>7<\/sup> EC values for Sandy Lake were in that range in 1955\u00a0 and 1971, and 1980 (not in 1977 however) but samples taken from 1985 onward were well above 100 with an overall upward trend. The low values in 1955 and 1971 are consistent with\u00a0 the lake being well below the mesotrophic range in those earlier years (AECOM 2014, as cited above).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4749\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/versicolor.ca\/sandylakebedford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/RegressEcYr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4749\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4749\" src=\"http:\/\/versicolor.ca\/sandylakebedford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/RegressEcYr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/versicolor.ca\/sandylakebedford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/RegressEcYr.jpg 550w, https:\/\/versicolor.ca\/sandylakebedford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/RegressEcYr-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EC appears to have been stable up to 1971, then increases continuously. Only the 2020 value is a an average for values (11) over a whole year. If the trend continues, it could result in the lake not turning over (mixing) as it normally does in the fall and spring. The salt content itself acts as a kind of tracer, and is easy and inexpensive to measure.<\/p>\n<p>EC values for water around the perimeter of Sandy Lake in Aug of 2017\u00a0 were highest at the inlet at the SW corner of the lake where Johnson&#8217;s Brook enters the lake.
