The following are comments from students made on standard Instructor Evaluation forms filled out under separate supervison in the last week of classes. They were typed into a word processor document without names by departmental staff. They are presented unaltered except for the addition of formatting tags. *********************************************

Dalhousie University Student Rating of Instruction Questionnaire
Department Biology Class 3068 Section 1 Instructor D. Patriquin

Question 1 - SIGNED

1. What did your instructor do to facilitate your learning in this class?
  • The class was set up so that we basically were independent in terms of how/what we decided to do the work > well except that deadlines were naturally given. It was very interesting providing us to learn webpages - making skills problems solving sikills and have a formal lecture as well for a class that was offered for the first time, it was successful.
  • He integrated computer work into the class which is a clinge. I enjoyed the computer work and DP put a lot of work into getting it organized.
  • The use of a different method, not all lectures, was much more interesting and helpful in learning and applying the material.
  • Booked computers as often as possible for student use; had good office hours; very approachable; easy to get in touch ie) via e-mail if necessary.
  • Provided excellent handouts and utilized the world wide web as a learning tool.
  • Excellent handouts, slides. Brought up important issues both global and local.
  • Provided an excellent learning environment. His organization of groups and peer assessment is a benefit to everyone in his class.
  • Dr. Patriquin created a very comfortable unthreatening environment to learn in. He was always open for questions and never made you feel stupid for asking ridiculous questions. He was also more than happy to help anyone. This class was interesting unique and creative.
  • Broke the class up into groups. Was always available in office hours and was fair in assessment.
  • Use of slides, handouts, etc. increased interest in topic, Dave is an excellent lecturer and shows great enthusiasm in his work and in the interests of the students. He was always open for suggestions and available for help.
  • Dr. Patriquin was very helpful in that he was available at all times (if not physically but through e-mail) for questions and extra help. He also provided extra lab time and had lab assistants for the computer/Internet component of the class.
  • Lots of preparation time went into this...at times it seemed "over" organized so that when things didn't go as planned we spent a lot of time re-organizing.
  • We had many problem solving sessions and a very interactive class. It was nice that class was small. Questions were answered at all times.
  • Group work (problem solving, etc.), internet use (class page on web/highly organized). Enthusiastic.
  • The use of slides and discussion was muy bueno.
  • Many methods of teaching and assessment, interactive, group work and individual study let students with a variety of fortes all be able to excel.
  • Used slides. Frequent quizzes of course material.
  • Great class! Definitely na bonus to have the opportunity to learn HTML at the same time and incorporate it into the course. Information taught was interesting and useful; evaluation was fair. Guest lecturer (Jennifer) - neat presentation.
  • He made the subject material seem interesting even at times when it may have been repetitive or mundan. Established an excellent report with the class - very interactive and therefore established an optional medium of communication. Very easy to talk to - great prof.

Question 2 - SIGNED

2. What did your instructor do which hampered your learning in this class?
  • Sometimes the computer aspect of the course was pretty messed up. However, I would not say that this was the fault of the professor > computer facilities offered at Dal were not available/suitable for this course needs (a couple of weekly sessions were missed). This issue should be looked into. Otherwise it was fine.
  • Nothing, DP was interested in the students concerns and went out of his way to make sure the class ran smoothly.
  • Since the class is new a few difficulties arose ie. too much was structured into the term, demands for Bulletin Boardds submissions. In the future, some of these small things will be rectified and it will be a great course.
  • Nothing. However - Dal's computing facilities leave a lot to be desired! Prof. was great, but we pay VERY HIGH tuition - where are the computers to justify it? (among other things!)
  • He gave the class too many components for the marks. The computers on Dal campus were not sufficient, and problematic for the computing part of this course.
  • Not much.
  • Nothing. He did what he could with the facilities and resources available to him.
  • Problem solving made the subject matter a little more interesting > maybe a "field" trip... b/c a lot of us aren't familiar with agricultural practices.
  • The class was a little disorganized which at times made it harder to learn. The computer facilities were not very good. There were never enough and constant problems with them.
  • Absolutely nothing.
  • Nothing.
  • Beyond instructor's control, but course relied on computer work, and there were many problems with computer availability. Computers were often either not available or not functioning properly, and with class size, timing became an issue and students were often not able to spend enough time on the computer.

Question 3 - SIGNED

3. Additional Comments:
  • A lot of this course required computer access and it was not available most of the time. The only problem was not with DP but the computing facilities here at Dal. For the money we pay the students deserve better and more computers.
  • There were problems getting enough computers. The labs really need to be upgraded.
  • Computers frequently didn't work; impossible to find an available computer at times. Bio/Geo Computer lab is THE WORST!! Programs are old; computers are ancient and very slow. No WordPerfect programs! Why not Windows '95? Where are all our $ going???
  • This course format was excellent. It is a format which other courses should follow. Use of problem solving and the idea of constructing a class web page is an excellent idea.
  • Due to organization of class, would be better if it was a Tuesday and Thursday class instead of Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Classes which surrounded our web pages were/are continually hampered by poor computing services. Even our own faculty's computer room is ancient. We need a more reliable user system.
  • Dal needs new computers.
  • Dr. Patriquin increased my interest in the course subject matter and field. He is a very good, informative professor.
  • Computer labs at Dalhousie leave little to be desired like a lot of things at Dal. Our course depended on computers and was greatly effected by inadequate systems look around, in order to be competitive some major upgrading is required.
  • Though I work in the computer labs and many improvements have been made, the need is still there for more computers as well as better network resources and an improvement in staff (as student support)
  • Because it was new and involved the use of interest tools which we weere not knowledgeable on it was difficult to get help outside of class time problems with the computers also compounded this problem.
  • Enthusiastic, creative ideas. Overall good teacher.
  • Dr. Patriquin is a swell guy.
  • Computer knowledge very useful. As well as course content, I learned a lot about HTML and using computers, virtually none of which I knew before rall of which I will be able to use again and again.
  • Should be more computers with internet services available (too few of the fast ones).
  • Computer facilities at Dal are horrible! Having a computer emphasis in this course (which is great!) I had a chance to see first-hand that there are not enough computers, many are "out of order" and the computer lab in never cleaned! (ie. keyboards are gross).
  • Computer facilities at Dalhousie, integrate to this course since a lot of it was web-based, are lacking and not sufficient. Only the Killam Library provided sufficient resources and these too were limited.

  • integrated interesting web page assignment.
  • Brought useful visual aids of related material.

Question 2 - UNSIGNED

2. What did your instructor do which hampered your learning in this class?
  • Technical problems with computers wasted time bulletin board was only used to gain points, not useful educational tool.
  • Way too much Math which really wasn't specified/indicated in course description.
  • Nothing all short-comings were due to lack of facilities or computer/downtime. (inavailable resouces).

Question 3 - UNSIGNED

3. Additional Comments:
  • Liked the use of textbook and quizzes, Jennifer Scott's lecture, perhaps computer time should be scheduled as tutorials ADDITIONAL to lecture time (as with other science classes).
  • Had problems getting into proper computers, not enough.
  • A most stimulating class, on an interesting subject. Related with enthusiasm! Kudos!
