Jim Carwardine on snowshoeing for Breakfast TV (Jan 15)

CTV roving reporter Cyril Lunney took a lesson in snowshoeing from Jim Carwardine at the trailhead for The Bluff Wilderness Hiking Trail on Jan. 14 for showing the next day on CTV's popular Breakfast Television (7-9 am daily).

Jim is an avid winter enthusiast. Until recently he kept a team of dogs for dogsledding and used snowshoes to make a track in fresh snow for the dogs. Cyril also talked to David Patriquin (currently co-chair of WRWEO with Richmond Campbell) and Jim about use of the trail and what to bring. Jim, Richmond Campbell and Dave Bryson conceptualized The Bluff Trail back in the early days of WRWEO in the 1990s.

On hand were a pair of close-to-6-foot long snowshoes that were made for Jim by Cree Indians for use in deep snow, a shorter wood & rawhide type Jim uses routinely, a pair of snowhoes made by Mi'kmaq people in Nova Scotia (probably in the late 1800s - David inherited them from his father), and a pair of the more common type available today made of aluminum with neoprene decking. The latter are good for hardpacked or well crusted snow, but the traditional snowshoes are much superior in unpacked snow.

CTV shot four 2-minute segments for showing between 7 and 9 a.m., Friday Jan 15.
