Vignettes

" To see takes us further than to explain but explaining communicates more precisely than seeing" - A.M.K. Muller

The vignettes combine a short essay with one or a few images to introduce a crop or livestock species or a practice or a process in agriculture to biology students who have little or no background in agriculture. They are prepared by students and the instructor in the Agroecosystems class. A selection is presented here.

Visitors might want to see if they can identify what's represented in the images without seeing the titles and text. To do so, select this NO TEXT option.

    4. Weeds and Domestication of Crops

Probably no single practice in agriculture is more disruptive than that of weed control, whether conducted with herbicides or by mechanical control. Yet weeds also have benefits, and we don't really want to eliminate them altogether. These vignettes explore various aspects of the biology of weeds and their roles and control in agroecosystems.
