ACCESSING JOURNALS AND DATABASES VIA THE WEB

CONTENTS OF THIS PAGE

This page was prepared to facilitate literature research by students in Dalhousie University classes BIOL 3068 (Agroecosystems) and BIOL 2500 (Web Literacy for the Natural Sciences) Of course anyone is welcome to use it. Visitors outside of the Dalhousie system will not be able to access all of these resources.

The Dalhousie Library provides access to a large number of databases which require a subscription. You need to be on the Dalhousie network to use this system, or be connected by a proxy server. Some of the databases offer comprehensive searches of titles, authors, keywords but do not offer ready or consistent access to abstracts and contents. Other offer convenient, full access to contents for a particular set of journals.

See Dal Library Page Find books, journals, data, etc. for guides on how to find books and journals, what to do if they are held in other libraries and guides to other resources such as the Electronic Text Center, data services, maps.

Following are some useful links to particular resources available through the Dal library system

Novanet

  • Novanet lists holdings in a consortium of academic libraries in Nova Scotia. Select the Novanet Catalog Button.

Novanet is used mostly to find whether a particular book is in a Novanet library, or to search for holdings of books on a particular topic or by a particular author. You can choose to search all libraries at once, or search a specific collection or library. It will tell you whether a book is in the library or out on loan. You can have an item delivered from another library by selecting Novanet Express. It costs $2 per item. Use the Patron Functions button to see a listing of items that you currently have on loan.

Acessing Novanet via the Web (using a browser) can be slow when there are many users on the system. Generally, there are fewer hangups and it works faster if you access it via telnet. Telnet to novanet.ns.ca. Follow instructions (enter "opac", and press enter twice; when it asks you for terminal emulation type select #5).

    Subscription Databases and Journals

    1. At Dal, use the Library's Electronic Journal Search Page to find journals and articles related to a particular topic.

    2. At Dal, use the Databases Categorized by Subject to identify all databases available in particular subject areas. Here are a few of them:
    3. At Dal, use Web of Science for efficient searches of and abstracts from, major journals back to 1989.

    4. At Dal, choose the link to CISTI Source for searches of key words in article titles/authors and document delivery for journal items not held by Novanet

    5. At Dal, make use of JSTOR to search old issues (5 years before present and older) of a wide range of journals and see full contents.

    6. At Dal use the Springer Search Tool and Academic Press Journals to search and see full contents of journals carried by these major publishers.

    7. At Dal, see Resources for Biology for general info, and many useful links

    8. At Dal make use of Thematic Search Tool for research in social statistics to research the Statistics Canada database.

    Universally Accessible Web Search Tools

  • Google, our favourite search engine. Make good use of boolean operators and other search modifiers on Google - see Google Help

  • See Dal Library Page on Critical Evaluation of Web Sites for criteria to apply to academic use of Web materials

  • See Web Search Strategies by Debbie Flanagan for an excellent tutorial on using WWW search engines.

  • www.findarticles.com provides searches and full articles from a large number of magazines and some scientific journals.
