Empetrum eamesii

Notes pertaining to photographs of Dec. 2-4, 2008

The changing colours and differences in colour between the three crowberries at this time allowed ready discrimination of differences in distribution of Empetrum eamesii and E. nigrum as illustrated in the photographs. They were taken within a few hundred meters north of the lighthouse, close to the sea. Empetrum nigrum and E. eamesii (likely all E. eamesii ssp eamesii) were very common, forming extensive mats. Corema conradii was present in a few sites but was not common. In general, E. eamesii occurred on the more exposed areas that would be subject to a lot of drying out and to sea spray; E. nigrum occurred in lower, more protected or wetter areas. They often occurred adjacent to each other, but not mixed except where there was a lot of microtopographic variation.
