Hudsonia ericoides

Notes pertaining to photographs of Aug. 4, 2008

Indian Field was visited in connection with the Nova Scotia Wild Flora Society's annual excursion to southwest N.S. to look at Coastal Plain species and habitats. Thanks to Charlie Cron and Heather Drope for organizing a great trip. Bob & Wendy McDonald discovered the site for Hudsonia ericoides shown here. It's an interesting one because both Corema conradii and Hudsonia ericoides require "some disturbance but not too much". The ATV track disturbed the ground initially and its regular use keeps out the larger competitors seen on either side of the track, but leaves the center relatively undisturbed for smaller species. Perhaps this is a case where there should be a sign saying "Don't disturb the center of the ATV track"!
