    (NEW, 12 Aug. 2004)
As discussed in other pages on this site, there are many factors that can be manipulated to control chinch bug without use of pesticides. These guidelines outline and priorize them according to the situation.

    The Guidelines

    (i) Control of Chinch Bugs in HRM Lawns With a
History of Significant Chinch Bug Damage

    View PROVISIONAL GUIDELINES

(ii) Prevention on Chinch Bug in HRM Lawns
with Low Broadleaf Cover and No History of
       Serious Chinch Bug Problems
    View PROVISIONAL GUIDELINES

(iii) Prevention of Chinch Bug Damage in HRM Lawns
with Moderate to High Broadleaf Cover

    The Approach

Moderate to high levels of broadleaf plants (clover, weeds) protect the lawn against chinch.

To make the weeds less prominent or unsightly, MOW HIGH (which favors grasses and hides many weeds) and/or ENCOURAGE CLOVER to mask the weeds (Guideline No V).

To get rid of numerous weeds without use of herbicides and guard against making the turf prone to chinch bug damage, consider a COMPLETE LAWN RENOVATION (Guideline No. IV)

    (iv) Complete Lawn Renovation Option

    (v) The Clover Option

    The Approach

A grass/clover lawn is highly resistant to pests.

See The Clover Option and Establishing White Clover in Lawns.
